Family creates scholarship in memory of John and Mary Hunter

December 22nd, 2011

In memory of longtime North Platte residents John and Mary Hunter, the family has established a scholarship fund designed to benefit students in both the academic and technical programs at North Platte Community College. A total of $2,000 will be split evenly between four students – two in academic studies and two in the college’s technical programs – annually.

These scholarships will be awarded to full- or part-time NPCC students who reside in the 18-county service area. They will be split between semesters and can be used towards tuition, fees, books or room and board.

John Hunter was born and raised south of North Platte and, although he left school after the eighth-grade to work on the family farm, he always understood the value of gaining knowledge. His wife, Mary, was also a firm believer in education. After graduating from Kearney State College, she spent her life teaching near Paxton and later in North Platte Public Schools.

In his nearly 40-year career at Coca-Cola Bottling Company, John became known throughout the company for his outstanding technical skills. He kept the plant running smoothly and efficiently for many years.

Not only was John known for his technical talents, but he and Mary were also known for their philanthropic efforts.
It is said that they believed others would benefit more from those gifts than they would; therefore they gave generously and often.

Throughout his career, John hired several people who had attended NPCC. He especially enjoyed it when others took an interest in the technical side of things.

According to his nephew Ken Hunter of Lincoln, it was the wish of John and Mary Hunter that scholarships be created from their estate to help others in their educational endeavors.

“It is the family’s hope that students in the area will be encouraged to continue their education in the academic and technical areas and become productive citizens for the benefit of all, much like John and Mary were,” he said.

NPCC Foundation receives $125K Peter Kiewit challenge grant

December 21st, 2011

The North Platte Community College Foundation recently received approval notification from the Peter Kiewit Foundation for a challenge grant of $125,000. The grant monies will be used towards building the new Mid-Plains Community College Extended Campus facility in Ogallala.

“We are extremely grateful to the Peter Kiewit Foundation Board for helping us with our vision for a new facility for the Ogallala Extended Campus,” said Terri Burchell, MPCC’s Director of Institutional Advancement.

According to Burchell, roughly $100,000 is needed in order to meet the Challenge Grant. Keith County Area Development (KCAD) has been providing leadership with the fundraising efforts.

“The College understands the importance of having a larger educational presence in Ogallala and is willing to make an investment in it,” Burchell said. “With the continued help and support from the communities in the Ogallala area we are confident that we will be able to meet this challenge grant and ultimately raise the funds needed for the new Ogallala Extended Campus facility.”

“I’m extremely excited that we are 90 percent complete when it comes to fundraising,” added Drew Krab, project coordinator and KCAD President. “With a few more contributions from the community, the concept of creating a college campus in Ogallala will become a reality. The Foundation’s generosity will make a huge impact on how education and economic development goes forward in Ogallala.”

The Peter Kiewit Foundation was formed in 1979 from Peter Kiewit’s estate and is the product of his own design and direction. He had long declared his disapproval of inherited wealth, but few knew that he would commit all of his personal wealth to a trust for charitable endeavors in Omaha, his hometown, and the surrounding region.

The smallest grant awarded by the Foundation was for $250 and the largest, to date, was $25 million. In the 28 years of Mr. Kiewit’s posthumous philanthropy, the Peter Kiewit Foundation has awarded a total of $489 million in grants and scholarships.
